China inaugurated the world’s longest bridge over the sea in 2018, in the province of Canton, in the south of the country. Xi Jinping, the president of China, has inaugurated the world’s longest bridge over the sea. The numbers needed to build it are incredible; a budget of 20 billion dollars, 400 thousand tons of steel, and 9 years to build it.

world's longest bridge

The bridge has been built to withstand typhoons and earthquakes up to category 8. To get large ships across the bridge, 7 km of the bridge were built below sea level in an underwater tunnel. This section of the bridge is 44 metres deep. Making this bridge one of the most complex engineering works in the world.

Bridge connects Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai

It will connect the cities of Hong Kong, Macao, and Zhuhai with a length of more than 55 kilometers. It took 4 hours to get from Hong Kong to Zhuhai, but the bridge has shortened it to just 45 minutes.

But not all that glitters is gold, as the construction of the bridge has been overshadowed by cases of corruption, work-related accidents, cost overruns, and political tensions with the former British colony of Hong Kong. In fact, 7 workers were killed and 250 injured during construction.

Even so, China is once again in the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the countries that builds the most huge architectural works. This has been demonstrated to us in the past with the construction of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal, and now also with the world’s longest bridge over the sea.
